Abstract
Objectives
The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the hostility and the experience of physical and mental symptom of adult women in Korea.
Methods
The data were collected by self-report questionnaires from 149 adults women of over 20 years old in Gyeonggi. Data were analyzed by using the SPSS win 11.0 program with t-test, ANOVA, pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression.
Results
The results showed that the mean score of hostility was 2.34 out of a possible maximum score of 4(range 1.38 to 3.29). There was a significant difference in the score of hostility according to alcohol intake (p=0.002). There were significant differences in the score of physical symptom by age (p=0.005), occupation (p=0.012), education level (p<0.001) and menopause (p=0.018). There was a significant difference in the score of mental symptom by spouse(p=0.045). The Hostility was positively correlated with physical (r=0.359, p<0.001) and mental (r=0.378, p<0.001) symptom experience. The stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that hostility significantly predicted the physical and mental symptom experience.
Conclusions
It is recommended that a nursing intervention program should be developed to manage hostility for adult women's health promotion. Further studies need to be prospectively conducted for group comparisons according to the life cycle of Korean women.
Key Words: hostility, women, physical symptom, mental symptom
