Abstract |
Purpose This study aims to identify the disease-related characteristics in children with precocious puberty and their mother's educational needs.
Methods This study surveyed 100 mothers of the children in the B city. A self-report questionnaire and an open question were used for this study to identify children’s disease-related characteristics and educational needs respectively. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and content analysis.
Results 96% of the children with precocious puberty were girls, and in terms of body mass index, 30% of the children were overweight and 13% were obesity. Although the mothers have high educational demand (99%), participants who have educational experience was only 2%. Educational needs were classified into four categories: ‘information of disease’, ‘health care for children’, ‘support for mother’, and ‘support for children.’ And subcategories were ‘causes and diagnosis’, ‘treatment’, ‘medication and stability’, ‘secondary sexual character’, ‘growth’, ‘medical insurance coverage’, ‘preventing endocrine disruptor’, ‘lifestyle and precaution’, ‘adjusting eating habits and diet’, ‘type of exercise and momentum’, ‘obesity prevention and management’, ‘education regarding children’s emotional stability and mind-control’, ‘parent’s role for children with early puberty’, ‘interaction and conversation with other precocious children’s parents’, and ‘experience of mothers.’ Conclusions: Obesity management is needed for children with precocious puberty. Also, it is identified that their mothers have diverse needs for education. Accordingly, an intervention with considering various educational needs and a social support are required for the children with precocious puberty and their mothers. |
