Experience on Demonstration Project for Expansion of National Immunization Program Coverage in Gunpho City, Korea

Abstract
Objectives
This study was designed to evaluate the feasibility for expansion of national immunization program coverage in Gunpho city, Korea. We expected this project to improve registration rate of private medical facilities, immunization coverage rate, quality of vaccination.
Methods
The period of this project was from Jul 1, 2005 to Dec 31, 2005. And demonstration project area was Gunpho city in Gyeonggi-Do, the number of target population (0~12 years old) was 54,535 persons. Among the 134 private medical facility including 1 general hospital, 7 hospitals and 126 clinics, 64 (47.8%) was participated in demonstration project. Data for analysis utilized main dataset of server computer which registered computerized immunization registry system and documents of project management team. The main focus for analysis was immunization rate, registration of participated medical institutions, total number of institution for immunization per 1 target person. Results: The immunization rate of 1st vaccination of DTaP was 97.6%, a share of immunization of health center decreased from 39.3% to 10.2%, but that of private medical institution increased rapidly. The waiting time for vaccination was 1 minute 28 seconds in health center, 10 minute 56 seconds in private institution. The time of judging for cost reimbursement by computerized aided system was 22.4 seconds and the rate of this day registration from vaccination to registration on the national immunization registry system was 99.1% in health center, 94.3% in private institution. The average number of institutions per 1 target person for immunization was 1.08, 7.5% of target person changed immunization institution during 5 months. Conclusions: The demonstration project in Gunpho city revealed positive results in the aspect of vaccination rate, registration rate and quality, consumer's accessibility, quality of vaccination service. Therefore, the more aggressive participation of private medical institution is expected to improve the expansion of national immunization program coverage.
