Abstract |
Objectives The purpose of this study was to assess a comprehensive examination of five hypotheses related to promotion and a disincentive of the father's household participation in three East Asian Countries.
Methods The subjects of this study were 1250 Korean household, 800 Chinese household, and 1000 Japanese household who send their children to a nursery. The questionnaire consisted to husband's age, income, education, number of children, age of youngest child, male’s household participation, wife’s age, income, education, whether or not living parents, male’s home time, presence or absence occupation of wife, traditional values, sense of parent role. We designed the casual model to examine the relationship between male's household participation and five hypotheses about household participation. Above model was examined by using structural equation modeling. We used the data from 259 Korean household, 153 Chinese household, and 240 Japanese household with no missing values on the variables.
Results As a result, there were similar among three countries that ‘Substitute hypothesis of resources’and ‘An ideology hypothesis’ were supported. On the other hand, it was confirmed that there are some differences not only common in promotion and a disincentive of male's household participation by the three countries with different social and cultural background.
Conclusions In the future, it is desirable to validate the causal relationship between adding new variables and hypotheses. Also, it is suggesting the need to develop common supporting program and original supporting program based on social/cultural background aimed at promoting the male’s household participation. |
