Status of National Antenatal Hepatitis B Screening and Neonatal Immunization Program in Korea

Abstract
Objectives
: The purpose of this study was to survey current status of national antenatal hepatitis B screenings and neonatal immunization programs among clinics and hospitals in Korea.
Methods
: From July 2002 to December 2002, 848 hospitals(507,151 deliveries) were surveyed and 341 hospitals(279,734 deliveries, 40.2%) completed the survey.
Results
: 298(87.4%) hospitals were participating in the national program for preventing vertical transmission of hepatitis B. 93.6% of respondents agreed in the necessity of the screening. 76.9% had seen brochures about the screening program and 67.5% of hospital had educated their staff about the program. Many respondents(23.2%) felt too complex about the reimbursement process and Some respondents(19.1%) answered complicatedness filling the documents. Average of 2.8 and 1.6 persons were involved in the program at hospitals and clinics respectively. Many respondents(8.2%) found lack of public information was urgent problem in the national screening program.
Conclusions
: It is important to have more hospitals and clinics participating in the screening program by active public information and exchanging informations among the various related groups.
