Abstract |
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of aromatherapy on
postpartum mother's perineal discomfort and breast milk immunoglobuoin A concentration.
Methods : The research design was clinical trial, repeated measures over time, non
equivalent control group pretest-posttest design.
The subjects were postpartum mothers delivered vaginally with episiotomy. They were
allocated to one of three groups, Aroma-sitz bath group, Aroma-soap group, and control
group. The experimental intervention was aromatherapy using essential oil. The methods of
aromatherapy were aromatherapy-sitz bath using Lavender, Myrrh, Chamomile, Neroli,
Rose, Grapefruit and aromatherapy-soap application making with Lavender, Mandarin,
Orange, Grapefruit, Roman Chamomile, Neroli. To evaluate the effect of aromatherapy,
perineal discomfort by VAS and mother's breast milk Ig A concentration were measured.
Data were analyzed by repeated measures of ANOVA, ANOVA, ANCOVA, and χ2-test by
SPSS program.
Results : Most subjects of this study were primipara(63.9%). The means of mother's age, neonatal birth weight and length of episiotomy were 28.8 years old, 3263g, and 2.25㎝, respectively. The episiotomy discomfort was significantly low in the experimental groups(p=0.005). No significant group effects were found, but significant time effects were found for mother's breast milk Ig A concentration.
Conclusions : The findings of this study indicate that postpartum aromatherapy for perineal care could be effective in reducing perineal discomfort. But the effect for increasing immunity of aromatherapy did not be verified. |
